Clarinet
This is the Clarinet. To play the clarinet, first you must put a small piece of cane put into the mouthpiece, this is called a 'reed.' The most common type of clarinet is the B♭ clarinet. The clarinet has many buttons on it which allow the clarinet to go from a very low sound to a very high sound!

Saxophone
The saxophone, also known as the 'sax' looks like a brass instrument and is actually made from brass, but it's a member of the woodwind family, because, like the clarinet, the saxophone needs a 'reed' to be put into the mouthpiece to play it!

Flute
The flute doesn't need a 'reed' to play it. To play the flute, you must blow over an opening at the top of the flute. The most common flute is in the key of C. You will notice that the flute and the piccolo look alike, the flute plays lower notes to the piccolo. The smaller the instrument, usually the notes played are higher!

Oboe
The Oboe is pitched in C. The oboe looks similar to the clarinet, but it's skinnier. The oboe uses a 'double reed.' The reeds which you put into the top are tied together, creating a 'double reed.' The clarinet uses a 'single reed.' A clarinet has a mouthpiece, but you will notice from the picture that the oboe doesn't have a mouthpiece, just the reed! | |
Piccolo
The piccolo is about half the size of a flute. The keys are the same as on the flute, the only difference is the sound that the instrument makes. The piccolo plays higher notes than the flute. |

Bassoon
Modern Bassoons are made from 'maple', a type of wood. The bassoon is a very long instrument which allows it to play very low notes. The bassoon separates into 6 different parts! The bassoon needs a 'reed' to play like many other woodwind instruments. The bassoon uses a 'double reed' like the oboe. |
